Play Reading Club – A Number by Caryl Churchill
February 23 @ 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm
FreeA Number, by Caryl Churchill, is a 2002 sci-fi drama that examines questions of identity and nature versus nurture, through the lens of a human cloning project.
To be read by the Brass Tacks Play Reading Club on Tuesday, February 23 at 6:30pm via Zoom
Registration required for the Zoom Link: https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZctcOmrpjktGtfItqymCN73PtSpfRe2pRHh
Video can be by laptop/computer, but Audio will be by phone call-in only. This helps keep the delays between lines to a minimum.
No script necessary. A script will be shared once the Zoom meeting starts.
The Reading: There are four characters, and stage directions to be read. While the play technically was written for two — with the same actor playing three of the four — we can have each clone be read by a different actor, to allow as many actors to read as possible. Roles can be cast without regard to gender or age.
Summary: Salter, a man in his early sixties, has a series of conversations with his sons — that is, his son Bernard, and the multiple clones made of Bernard. Each has a different history with Salter, each learns a different secret behind their origin, and each is affected drastically differently at the thought of meeting their identical “brothers.”
We will hold a discussion afterwards to discuss the show, its relevance, and its potential for production, as well as the BTE themes of Universality, Clarity, and Theatricality.
